Opening Titles - Research

Opening Titles Research

Opening titles are usually shown at the beginning of a motion picture, whether that is a TV programme or a film. Key conventions of an opening title sequence include:-
  • The name of the studios or production company that make the film
  • The title of the film
  • The names of key actors and key crew members
  • Music and sound effects.
In preparation for my project, I researched a few opening title sequences from films such as 'Se7en', 'Skyfall' and 'Spectre'. These sequences are referred to as title sequences and they are relatively common in James Bond films because they are built in a separate sequence to the film itself and they usually take place over a lengthy period of time in the film.

1). Se7en

These screen shots show the advantages of different conventions of an opening title sequence such as the names of the production company and A-List actors. The advantages of naming these things would be that it would attract a good market for example, the film would attracts fans of Brad Pitt and films made by New Line Cinema. In addition, the images shown in this title sequence could convey elements about the plot such as a potential murder.

2). Skyfall

Similarly, the advantages of naming such things as the production company and lead actor will help promote the film in a positive way. The advantages of naming the production company and actors like Daniel Craig will encourage fans of the actor or films from this production company to see the film. In addition, the images of James Bond sinking in this title sequence could suggest that someone will die in the film as a result of an event.

3). Spectre

Similarly, the production company and main actor's name are used to the marketer's advantage to help attract the audience. The use of Daniel Craig's name or the mention of this production company may encourage fans of the actor or fans of films made by this production company to see the film. The colour orange has connotations of fire, which could suggest to the audience that a dramatic event which will take lives, will take place during the film.
